WHAT IS THE AUSTIN METRO AREA?

ALEX includes the following Counties in the Austin Metro area: Bastrop, Bell, Blanco, Burnet, Caldwell, Comal, Fayette, Hays, Llano, Travis and Williamson Counties. We define this as the "Austin Metro Area." Government entities have no common definition for the area.

The U.S. Office of Management and Budget defines the Austin–Round Rock-Georgetown MSA (Austin MSA) as Bastrop, Caldwell, Hays, Travis, and Williamson Counties.

The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis includes the Counties of Blanco, Burnet, Lee, Llano, Mason, and Milam Counties, in addition to the Austin MSA, in its definition of the Austin Economic Area.

The Capital Area Council of Governments, an Austin-area intergovernmental cooperative, adds Blanco, Burnet, Fayette, Lee, and Llano Counties to the Austin MSA Counties in its definition of the metropolitan area.

The Austin Metro Area is a thriving and dynamic region in Central Texas. Let's delve deeper:

LOCALE

Location: Situated in the heart of Central Texas, The region includes urban, suburban, and even semi-rural communities.

Climate: Expect a humid subtropical climate. Summers can be hot, with temperatures often soaring above 100°F, while winters are generally mild. Occasional cold fronts can bring brief cooler periods.

ECONOMY

Diversity: The economy is robust and diversified, including sectors like technology, education, healthcare, government, and entertainment.

Georgetown: 2023's fastest growing City. Georgetown is known for its picturesque town square, Sun City (a large retirement community), and the scenic San Gabriel River.


Horseshoe Bay: is a luxurious lakeside resort town and regional destination. Overlooking the shimmering Lake LBJ, it's a haven for boating, golfing, and relaxation. It offers upscale amenities, stunning landscapes, and a serene atmosphere.

Hutto:  Located northeast of Austin in Williamson County. Known for its iconic "Hutto Hippos" mascot, the community boasts a rich history, family-friendly atmosphere, and a blend of rural charm with modern amenities. 


Kyle: Renowned for its scenic beauty, it's a gateway to the Texas Hill Country. Kyle maintains a small-town feel while experiencing rapid growth. Its community events, parks, and proximity to Austin make it appealing.


Lakeway-Bee Cave-The Hills: These upscale communities are nestled along Lake Travis' shores in Texas Hill Country. It is the home of The Hill Country Galleria. The area is known for scenic beauty, golf and outstanding dining and shopping.

Marble Falls: Known for its stunning lakes and rolling landscapes. A popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, it offers boating, fishing, and hiking. Its charming downtown reflects its warm community spirit.


Manor: Once a sleepy farming town, it's now a growing suburb with a mix of historic charm and modern development. Known for its family-friendly events and parks, close-knit community feel while offering easy access to urban amenities.


New Braunfels: Renowned for the Comal and Guadalupe Rivers, attracting tubers and outdoor enthusiasts. Gruene Historic District and Schlitterbahn Waterpark are notable attractions. 


Pflugerville: Known for its serene lakes and parks, it offers recreational activities like fishing and hiking. Its blend of small-town charm and modern conveniences makes it a sought-after destination for families and professionals.

Round Rock: Located north of Austin, Round Rock is known for its family-friendly atmosphere, top-rated schools, and as the headquarters of Dell Technologies.


San Marcos: It is the home of Texas State University.  The San Marcos River is a hub for outdoor activities, it attracts tubers, kayakers, and nature enthusiasts. The city also boasts the expansive San Marcos Premium Outlets.


Taylor: Not well known yet. It is the site of the new $13B Samsung Semiconductor Plant. It is known for its iconic brick streets and preserved architecture, Taylor offers a blend of old-world charm and modern development.


Temple: The County Seat of the northern most County in the Austin Metro Area. It is home to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center, one of the largest hospital systems in Texas.


Wimberley: Is a haven for artists and nature lovers. The town boasts crystal-clear rivers, unique shops, and local artisans. Popular attractions include Jacob's Well and Blue Hole, making Wimberley a cherished getaway destination.


EDUCATION

PK-12: There are numerous top-rated public schools across the MSA, as well as prestigious private and charter schools.


Universities: The University of Texas at Austin, Austin Community College, Texas State University in nearby San Marcos, and Southwestern University in Georgetown provide a plethora of higher education opportunities.


TRANSPORTATION


Public Transit: Capital Metro serves the Austin area with buses and a commuter rail, while other cities have their own local transit options.


Traffic: As with many growing metro areas, traffic congestion can be an issue, especially during rush hours. It's beneficial to be mindful of this when determining where to live relative to work or school.
