Property Description

This is your opportunity to bring an amazing and unique historic homestead property back to life! This homestead was built by Klemcke in the late 1800s, one of the early settlers in this area, for a family member (reportedly, the sister of the builder). The original homestead is across the road from this property, and is still occupied by a descendant of the builder, but this property was sold out of the family many years ago. The original house is built of stone, employing a construction method ("German Schmier") common in Germany and used in the early days of German settlement in Texas, particularly by Castroville colonists. The walls are very thick (12-16 inches), and provide excellent insulation from the elements; you can cool off inside this home even on a very hot day. Unlike some examples of this type of construction, the house has very high ceilings. The stone house has a grand foyer/entrance hall with carved double doors (currently protected by plywood), with rooms opening off either side of the hall. The stone house appears to have been heated originally by a wood-burning stove, and had no indoor plumbing. Later additions to the home (1920s-1940s) added bathrooms and a utility room, as well as a more modern kitchen and additional living space on the north and east sides of the home. There is a well on the property; it is at least 100 feet deep with water at about 85 feet at last check, which could potentially be used for watering this 1 acre tract. The house is on CPS electric and SAWS water, but would likely require new septic. There is no natural gas available; propane may have been used in the past, as there are gas valves visible in the house, and evidence of a propane tank east of the house.
